Dummy Mix 71 // President Bongo

“It was a long series of mistakes… I was swindled into this…” is how President Bongo describes his day job as a member of Gus Gus. Bongo, full name Stephan Stephensen, has been part of the Icelandic group since 1995. Whilst the band has had a rather large and constantly changing lineup in the past, the past couple of years have seen a return to the original trio form. Gus Gus is known for their unique genre-unspecific electronic music, and the last few albums have drifted even more into a dance-pop meets techno realm. Bongo’s other aliases include President Bongo, more for solo productions and DJing, and his collaboration with Jack Schmidt, Gluteus Maximus. They have remixed the likes of Björk, Sigur Rós, Superpitcher, Ada, and others. Gluteus Maximus have rumblings of a full length album coming out later in the year while Gus Gus release an album later this month.

How’s it going?

Can you please tell us a bit about the mix?

What’s coming up for you over the next few months?

I am focusing on a project for the Icelandic art festival. It’s a concert with a little electronic stuff, piano and a male choir of 70 men and a singer! Pretty interesting I would say 🙂

How did the name “President Bongo” come about?

It has its origins from Gabon in Africa and I stole it from there, or sampled it if u prefer…

What are you looking forward to the most with the impending arrival of Spring and Summer?

The sun
