Lindsey Rome's Inspirations

New Nashville resident Lindsey Rome is best known as Jamie Lidell’s video producer and has photographed Regina Spektor, Langhorne Slim, Kimya Dawson. Raised between London and Ohio, and educated at the Manhattan School of Visual Arts, she got into film working on Regina Spektor’s Us video in 2004. She is inspired by Mexican folk art and jazz. Lindsey’s videos for Jamie are quirky and clever, a result of her and Jamie’s close creative relationship. Most recently she has documented Jamie making his album ‘Compass’ and the subsequent tour.

What music is really inspiring you right now?

The music that inspires me today is artists like James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson, Little Richard, Billie Holiday, Michael Jackson, Nina Simone, Edith Piaf, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline, PJ Harvey

Now I think I might be approaching my jazz phase…I’ve felt that coming on for some time. 🙂 Serendipitously, last night a friend introduced me to The Jazz Loft, an incredible archive of photographer W. Eugene Smith’s home/office on 6th Ave where he obsessively audio recorded and photographed everything that went on in his space.  The result is a MASSIVE improv jazz session archive that is quite inspirational. Visual art and music are inextricably linked for me.  I love Mexican folk Art and Mexican folk music and I’ve attached a painting by Frida Kahlo, a photo of her with husband Diego Rivera and this song by Chavela Vargas.
