Logic1000 on Finding Safety, Freedom and 'Confirmation!'

The producer opens up on motherhood, trust, and the ongoing work of accepting every version of herself.

Logic1000 remarkably captures the texture of memory, how life and people constantly evolve, and the process of working towards self-trust - until it becomes deeply ingrained in our identity, flaws and all - on her latest album, 'Confirmation!'

The Australia-born, London-based producer, alongside Big Ever, has seamlessly curated a world beyond her usual musical environment, with support from Christine and the Queens, Jam City, FAUZIA, yunè pinku, KUČKA and Tiffi M, further expanding Logic1000's sonic world. Its beauty draws listeners into her mind in a way that keeps the energy alive, providing a space for us all to inhabit. 'Confirmation!' becomes a place where the music accepts us for who we are and shows us how we can build from there, which is why Logic1000 remains an essential figure in the electronic music scene, in the UK, Australia and worldwide.

Ahead of the release of 'Confirmation!', DMY sat down with Logic1000 to talk about the album and its themes of motherhood, childhood and personal identity, as well as the record's collaborations,

'Confirmation!’ draws on the sacrament of itself that has become a deeply personal symbol of affirmation and self-trust. How much of that sacrament has been you pushing your sound and collaborations since ‘Mother’ and ‘DJ-Kicks’?

Self trust is new to me, but since ‘Mother’ I feel like I have actively been working towards it being a deeply ingrained part of my identity. For most of my life I experienced both a distrust of others and an equal distrust of myself. I think this came from some years of my life where I was betrayed and my safety was compromised. Thankfully, my life turned around once I met my partner (and co producer) Tom, who taught me to see the world differently. Not through advice or words, but through showing me unconditional love and safety. I think this was a major blessing for us because not only has that work paid off in our marriage and myself, but also in the Logic1000 project. That feeling of safety allows you to feel the freedom to experiment and to wipe away fear. I also think that feeling of trust (going both inwards and outwards) lowers your cortisol and allows you to be more present. To witness and absorb your inner world and then turn it into art.

With your contribution to the 'DJ-Kicks' series, it showcased such a wide variety of sounds with music from yourself, Blood Orange, Oklou, Smerz and more, whilst 'Confirmation!' sees contributions from KUČKA, Jam City, Christine and the Queens, FAUZIA, and yunè pinku. Selecting collaborations for an album is quite an exercise in trust. What is it that you saw in these artists that made you have faith in their art?

All the artists I worked with on this album have both a confidence and a vulnerability to their art. I love working with people who are real and authentic.

Logic1000 press shot

You've spoken about going through an "identity crisis" regarding your place in the music industry. "Confirmation!" seems to answer that with acceptance that actualisation is ongoing rather than final. What did it actually take to get from questioning where you belonged to trusting yourself enough to make this record?

I think life and people are constantly evolving. I don’t believe I reached any kind of destination once I made this record. It feels like I hit a moment of time where I felt present and had my guards down. It was a beautiful time of my life and making this album with Tom was so fun. We were both experimenting with a sonic world neither of us had a huge amount of experience in. We were following our noses, in a way. Even since finishing the album I’ve had moments of weakness where I have questioned my place in the music world. I came out of that slump because I think I realised that this whole album is actually about that notion of not needing to be fixed. Sure, I/we are flawed but as long as we are good people and leading with kindness and compassion in the world, we are enough. I don’t believe holding that belief will make anyone lazy or care less about the world, instead I think if we focus less on fixing our flaws, we will then look outward and have the confidence to make our world a better place.

The lead single ‘All In For You’ is such a dream-like electronic track that embodies the emotions of ‘Confirmation!’. Do the lyrics speak to your past and present selves, or to the person you will become as you grow more creative while balancing motherhood?

KUČKA wrote the lyrics for ‘All In For You’, we always allow our writers to do that, and she naturally did the most beautiful job. For me, I interpret it as my desire to always look for answers and questioning what’s next and what’s out there, but then realising that those answers are irrelevant when we look at humanity and life with a zoomed out perspective. I think the song is a nice way to feel the enormity of life on this earth and put the minutiae into perspective.

You’ve become one of electronic music’s most distinctive voices with co-signs from Four Tet, Floating Points, and Caribou. Who has been your favourite artist to show you love?

I’m so grateful for all of my co-signs and without them I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in. If I had to choose a favourite it would be my beautiful friend Sofia Kourtesis. She is such a major supporter of our work. She is a gentle, loving and very talented artist who leads with her heart. She cares so deeply about life and humanity. I love her and her music so much.

Who are some up-and-coming or more underground electronic artists from Australia you could put us on to right now?

There’s so many, these aren’t exclusively electronic or up and coming but some favourites are: Hugh B & Setwun, Maina Doe, Skeleten, DJ Plead, Cousin, Nina Buchanan, Big Ever, VV Pete and Utility.

What is it about the songs you shared on Instagram - like ‘Shimmer’ by Fabiana Palladino and’Sof n Thik’ by LeRon Carson - that inspired your album and helped you create this sonic world for ‘Confirmation!’?

I would find it hard to describe something as deep and nuanced as that. I feel like I wouldn’t be able to find the words to articulate it. But if I had to say something it would be the feeling of these songs being deeply personal from the moment you first listen.

How was it having Big Ever help co-produce the album? He’s got a reputation for taking dreams and visions to the next level.

He is an insanely talented producer and artist and it’s very affirming to work with someone I know and love and trust so deeply. He has been working with some incredible artists outside of Logic and I feel like every day he just keeps developing and evolving both as a person and producer. I think because we have been so deep in each other's lives for 15 years it means we have this intrinsic link between us that keeps us on the same page creatively. I really trust his taste and he really trusts mine so in that sense we work really well as a producer duo, there’s a very clear understanding of what we want out of music.

Lastly, what childhood memories come to mind for you when making the record, and now listening back to 'Confirmation!'?

To be honest, I was thinking a lot about the love my mother gave me. All the cultural things I grew up around, like extended family, church, music, guitar, food, language. This album gave me a newfound appreciation of my family and cultural identity, which I feel I lost for a little while there. I’m so lucky they have all stood by me and are my biggest supporters.
