The Waves

What’s the story?

San Francisco duo’s debut album of shoegaze gone West-coast.

What does it sound like?

Er, waves, actually. Purring psychedelic pop flooded in churning noise.

Highlights?

Love Fade is shimmery and alluring as a desert mirage, and The Waves crashes beautifully. She’s got a voice of velvet, which complements the deep, expansive textures on show perfectly.

Lowlights?

Haze Interior: cliched shoegaze song title, cliched shoegaze song. Problem is melancholy and ethereal with distorted guitars, is quite a saturated market. Would you reach for this over ‘Loveless’?

Verdict?

Good, but they’ve not reinvented the wheel – or indeed the big fuzzy guitar.

Mexican Summer released Tamaryn’s album ‘The Waves’ on September 6th
