This is Where I Recorded and Mixed the Album and All the Gear I Used...featuring Ben Hauke
Our interview inspired by Four Tet's infamous Tweet asks artists about the places they make music and the equipment they used to do it.
Ben Hauke has spent the best part of a decade immersed in groove-driven electronic music, moving fluidly between House, Techno and Broken Beat - a sound honed on dancefloors and, more recently, on the road as part of King Krule's touring band. His productions have already found a home on Fabric's 'Broken Beat' compilation and Mount Kimbie's 'Fabric Presents', picking up support from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, OK Williams and Jamz Supernova along the way.
Now, with new album 'Future Bruk', Hauke is pushing the genre somewhere darker, faster and more deliberately his own, rejecting the softer, jazzier end of Broken Beat in favour of electro, two-step and raw club experimentation. Built largely between July and December 2025 and whittled down from around 25 tracks to a tightly focused ten, it's a record shaped as much by instinct as by gear.
Here, Hauke walks us through exactly how he made it - the software, the hardware, and the setup behind 'Future Bruk'.
So where did you make the album?
Home studio in Peckham, shared studio in Shoreditch, a flight from Iceland and partly recorded in Nigeria.
List and describe all the equipment that you used.
Logic, laptop, MPC1000, Korg Electribe EA-1, Roland JV1080, SP-404 SX, many samples and VSTs.
How would you describe the album?
A challenge to explore a style further, whilst creating range and accessibility. Broken Beat for a contemporary DJ. A tone of darkness and slight pessimism to the future..
What did you learn, or what would you do differently on the next album?
Have a concept or vision before making it. That helps. Decide what you are going to do and then go from there. This is the first time I did this with a project. Taking time to curate the track list was also a new thing that was worth it. And don't listen to the songs for a while - OR YOU START TO HATE THEM.
What would be your dream location for recording?
I really don't have one. The songs are made with me, not a studio. But an album made in the bath would be cool.
Any new equipment you would like to use on the next record?
Currently nooo, but one day an album with me drumming throughout will happen… so maybe a drumkit…
'Future Bruk' is out now via Woop Records.
