Track by Track: Saskia - Wearing All White Like An Angel
Saskia describes herself as "a happy girl making sad music" - a tension that sits at the heart of her debut EP, 'Wearing All White Like An Angel'. Since emerging during lockdown with raw, stripped-back piano performances on TikTok, the Devon-born, London-based singer-songwriter has built a devoted following on the strength of her haunting vocals alone, a trajectory that's carried her through 2025's 'The Noise', a Black Butter Records signing, and vocal samples from Don Toliver and Rema.
Across five tracks, the EP pulls together ethereal soundscapes, left-leaning R&B and fearless experimentation, moving from the lullaby-esque opener 'creek' through to the drum and bass-inflected 'sickofmyself' and the atmospheric title track. "I see the project as being about the pain of changing, moving away from who you once were," Saskia explains, "and the longing for a time that no longer exists that comes with growing older."
Here, she walks us through 'Wearing All White Like An Angel', track by track.
1. creek water
"An ode to my childhood home. I think this song encapsulates the main feeling I had when making this project, which was a sense of longing for a place and time that no longer existed. I really couldn’t put my finger on, or even find a word for what this feeling was at the time. I grew up in a tiny village by a creek - as much as I know things will never be the same as they once were, the creek always will be."
2. saysomething (bite)
"An attempt to go against the direction in which we’re headed. I felt so frustrated by my phone and the ever-evolving digital world around me at the time, I found myself loosing sight and becoming quite existential. I think I made this song as a hopeful reminder to keep going even though you can’t see what’s past the bend."
3. sickofmyself
"Was the hardest song to write on this project. I was reluctant to express such dark feelings in a song for fear of it being ‘too much’. What I learnt in the process of writing it was that no matter how much you try to stop things from coming up in your music, they will always come spilling out eventually and the sooner you let them, the sooner you can move on. My favourite artists / writers are the ones who are unashamed to tell the truth no matter how ugly that looks."
4. tongue
"Felt like the weirdest thing I had made and I have Bob (Mackenzie) the producer, to thank for that. It pushed me out of my comfort zone in a way that any process of growing should. I knew I’d never made anything like it before and I knew that that’s exactly what I loved about it."
5. wearing all white like an angel
"Was probably the most fun to make. It took time and various iterations, each one I loved, but the outcome is so special to me. We had the wonderful Peter Gregson come and play strings at the end of making it and it was such a joy to watch him play as a listener rather than a writer. It’s quite hard for me to put into words what the song means to me, it was written for multiple people in my life, but it feels like the truth and the right place to leave the project on."
'Wearing All White Like An Angel' is out now via Black Butter Records.
