Fabiana Palladino Contemplates the Surreal on New Single 'I Can't Dream Any More'

It's another cut from her upcoming debut album

'I Can't Dream Anymore' is Palladino's third single from her forthcoming eponymous record, which will be released via Jai Paul's label Paul Institute.

It follows her modern Motown collaboration with Paul, 'I Care', last year, and most recent release, 'Stay With Me Through The Night'.

Offering another taste of what's to come, Palladino switches things up slightly by harnesses dark 80s synths on the new track, creating an almost melodramatic feeling as it edges towards power-ballad status.

Writing the album during the uncertain period of the first lockdown, in the wake of a long term relationship ending, Palladino would listen to the shipping forecast for comfort. While she found the broadcast relaxing, it also acted as a form of escapism for the artist, enabling her to romanticise her isolation.

"I was staying up too late, writing songs for the album alone and the intensity and unreality of everything started to affect my sleep…I realised after a while that even when I did sleep, I wasn’t really dreaming. Everything felt very surreal and it reminded me of when I’ve been in the aftermath of big changes, those moments in life where everything shifts and you have to reconfigure yourself," she explains.

The music video echoes the visions Palladino had of herself during this time; isolated and alone, out at sea, connecting to others by broadcasting a radio show. Conceptualised by Palladino and directed by Josh Renaut and Caroline Waxse, we see Palladino aboard her own Radio Caroline, the world's most famous pirate radio station in the 60s and 70s.

This theme of connection and disconnection is explored in further detail across Palladino's forthcoming album, set for release on 5 April. It's a family affair; Pino Palladino (Fabiana's father), Maz Palladino (her mother) Giancarla Palladio (her sister), and Rocco Palladino (her brother and Yussef Dayes' bassist), all appear on the project, plus more from her long-time collaborator, Jai Paul.

'I Can't Dream Anymore' is out now via Paul Institute / XL Recordings.
