Julia-Sophie nods to her song-writing roots with intimate EP 'it feels like thunder'
Anglo-French electronic producer and artist Julia-Sophie today shares her brand new EP ‘it feels like thunder’, a brooding and other-worldly release on Beat Palace, the freshly-minted imprint of Metronomy’s Anna Prior.
After years of playing in a rock band and, more recently, dream pop collective Candy Says, supporting the likes of Blondie and IDLES, the Oxford-based musician is carving out a path of her own.
Following on from last year’s ‘heartbroken </3’ EP and 2020’s ‘y?’ project, Julia-Sophie returns with 3 fresh tracks, revealing more of her self and her artistic vision than ever before. Opening single ‘dial your number’ is an avant-dance pop anthem about closing the door on someone for the last time, using tribal drum beats and pulsating synths to re-create that punch in the gut feeling of realising you have to let go.
Second track ‘not beautiful’ shows exactly why the rising talent has garnered comparisons to alt-pop icons such as FKA twigs and Grimes, punctuating an ethereal, synth-washed production with her haunting vocal range.
Singing of desire, loss, love and relief, final track ‘video girl’ is an emotionally-charged exploration into the singer’s vulnerabilities. Imbued with feelings of solitude and longing, the ambient track highlights Julia-Sophie’s sensational production and song-writing abilities.
