phonewifey gets their album roll-out underway with new single 'Forever 2021'
This year has been a big success for phonewifey and they’re not done just yet. ‘Forever 21’ is the latest single from the experimental London-based producer and marks the announcement of their upcoming thirteen-track album of the same name.
Their consistent output of music has seen them release a bevvy of EPs and singles, such as their joint ‘phoneAVA’ project with AVA AKIRA, ‘OCULUS’, and their link-up with CY AN on ‘WAIFAN’. Due to drop next year, phonewifey’s upcoming ‘Forever 21’ album takes a deep dive into mainstream pop music, borrowing heavily from moments in its recent history that have sparked inspiration for the producer, such as EDM, chart-pop, bubblegum-pop and Adele-ballads.
Releasing today, the lead title track of the album is a beautiful yet melancholic melodic-rap ballad about industry exploitation, gatekeeping and cynicism. It’s a song that simultaneously demonstrates the sonic beauty and emotion found in this generation’s pop tropes while discussing the industry’s more pernicious and deceptive characteristics.
On the track, phonewifey says: “It’s always hard to know where and how to direct your frustration and unrest in this scene. There is so much amazing music around today, there are so many incredible artists, but there’s so much to despise about the industry and the brand-consumerist game that seems to be a prerequisite to success in the field. This song is me trying to acknowledge this constant paradox with existing in this space: I hate it here, I love it here.”
