Razzamtazz, Barcelona

Girl Unit mixes with swagger at Hessle Audio's party.

Playing in the ‘Lolita’ room at the west Barcelona club Razzmatazz last night, while Bloody Beetroots played to the masses, was Girl Unit. One really good recent thing – as evidenced by the Boiler Room birthday party, Jackmaster’s Fabric mix &c – is a new willingness for the scene’s best DJs to play absolute classics. Anyone can grab some upfront FLACs from some random Soundcloud but it takes guts to play a tune everyone knows. So, refreshingly, Girl Unit’s set at the Hessle Audio off-Sonar party walked his trademark line of rude energy and technicolour irascibility, tipped in favour of almost shirty rawness, throwing Cybotron’s Clear and the already vintage Instra:Mental When I Dip around the chords of his signature Wut. A moment of total imagination, neon elegance for the night sky, in a set marked by rippling snaps and upfront swagger.
