Pharrell changed Tyler, The Creator's life with this piece of advice
Tyler, The Creator has revealed the life-changing piece of advice Pharrell once gave him in a teaser trailer for the new docuseries RapCaviar Presents.
Premiering on Hulu in the US on March 30, the series tackles the issues of today through the personal stories of hip hop artists, featuring interviews with Tyler, Jack Harlow, City Girls, Polo G, Roddy Rich and more.
Tyler appears in a teaser trailer for the series talking about Pharrell's influence on his music career. He recalls a time at the studio when Pharrell passed on some advice that music executive Jimmy Iovine had once shared with him.
“He’s like, ‘Pharrell, do you like house music?’” Tyler said. “He’s like, ‘Yeah, it’s a good genre, good tempo’. He’s like, ‘No Pharrell, house music – good music that could buy you a house.’”
The trailer then cuts to Pharrell repeating the advice he gave to a young Tyler, saying: “Make something undeniable and make it equally as infectious. Why are you doing music? Is it because you just want to look cool? Because that will burn out. When it becomes purpose-oriented, it can be as cool as The Flash, but it will be much more meaningful.”
Tyler goes on to describe his reaction: “Oh fuck. No more being silly – music first. At that moment, we went home and I just wanted to change everything and I just wanted to switch. And the switch fucking happened.”
