Kelela Enters a New Era with ‘idea 1’

A politically charged, emotionally raw first glimpse of what’s next.

Kelela is back - and she’s not easing in quietly. New single 'idea 1' lands as a striking reset, a track that feels less like a standalone release and more like the opening scene of a larger, unfolding world.

Produced by Oscar Scheller, the song leans into a tense, atmospheric palette, giving space for Kelela’s voice to move between restraint and rupture. It’s a sound that builds on the immersive electronic landscapes of 'Raven,' but pushes further into abstraction - unsettling, expansive, and emotionally loaded.

Visually, the track is brought to life by directing duo 91 Rules (Erik Saltzman and Cameron Tidball-Sciullo), whose surreal, allegorical video captures a woman on the brink. Here, breakdown and breakthrough blur into one, with destruction reframed as a necessary precursor to renewal.

Thematically, 'idea 1' confronts the psychic weight of existing in a world that feels perpetually on edge. Co-written with artist Janiva Ellis, the track doesn’t offer resolution. Instead, it sits in the discomfort, refusing to look away. It’s a sentiment Kelela roots in the lived experience of Black women, adding a layer of urgency and specificity to the track’s emotional core.

'idea 1' arrives as both a statement and a question mark. If this is the starting point, whatever comes next isn’t just evolution - it’s transformation.

'idea 1' is out now via Warp Records.
