Maria Minerva - Kyrie Eleison

With two albums out on Not Not Fun and an EP on 100% Silk out already this year, Estonian artist Maria Minerva is set to release even more this year. The ‘Sacred And Profane Love’ EP, on 100% Silk, is already out as a download and will be physically released in the next couple of weeks.

It’s closest in sound to her previous 100% Silk release, the ‘Noble Savage’ EP, another EP of syrupy dancefloor material. However, progression is clear. While that last release generally leaned towards the feathery sounds of nu-disco, ‘A Sacred And Profane Love’ is more varied. It begins with A Love So Strong, a loose and swaying track carried along on an oddly beguiling detuned vocal, moving into the more insistent Kyrie Eleison (Greek for “Lord have mercy”), it’s 4/4 pulse bathed in shiny noise. Gloria naively coos it’s way along, and then there’s Another Time & Place, a very different beast to anything she’s done before, with it’s brittle Middle Eastern percussion and clean analogue lines. We’ve heard a lot from Maria Minerva this year it’s true, but ‘A Sacred And Profane Love’ is as smart as anything else she’s done, and offers plenty of reasons to keep listening.
