One of the year’s biggest Afrobeat tracks, Joeboy's 'Sip (Alcohol)' just got its own music video

"We all need our form of escape. Something to take our mind off the issues.”

Afropop, R&B singer-songwriter Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus, aka Joeboy just followed up his runaway hit ‘Sip (Alcohol)’ with a striking music video directed by Dammy Twitch. The lyric video was released last month and now the tune is visualised via an assemblage of scenes that switch between Joeboy singing, a car burning down and choreographed dancing. His breakout single ‘Baby’ and the 2020 Mr Eazi and Deejay Neptune collaboration on ‘Nobody’ was the ‘number 1 song of 2020 in Nigeria’.

Produced by Tempoe (producer of CKay’s international hit ‘Love Nwantiti’) ‘Sip (Alcohol)’ is one of the year’s biggest Afrobeat singles of 2021, topping Apple Music’s streaming charts in 17 countries. Despite its name, Joeboy has stated it is not intended to endorse irresponsible alcohol consumption.

He explains; “‘Sip (Alcohol)’ is about me personally giving myself breaks from all the challenges I have to face. At every level you get to, there are different challenges and problems you have to solve. It never ends. We all need our form of escape. Something to take our mind off the issues.”
