Charli XCX critiques the BRITs for not including women in its Artist Of The Year nominees

"We’re doing everything right."

We were all confused when the BRITs announced the Artist Of The Year nominees and Charli XCX wasn't on it, and apparently Charli was equally baffled.

At the BRITs Red Carpet ceremony, the BBC asked the pop singer why she thought she didn't get nominated for the category. Charli pointed to the critiques of the BRITs as sexist, saying, "There’s many [female artists], so I don’t know. You should ask them. We’re doing everything right. I don’t think it’s our fault. I think it might be theirs.”

The backlash against the BRITs started last month after they announced their Artist Of The Year category, which notably lacked any female voices. The BRITs had gotten rid of its gendered categories two years earlier to try and make the show more inclusive, but it seems to have had the opposite effect.

This year, the awards show instead chose to nominate Fred Again, Harry Styles, George Ezra, Central Cee, and Stormzy.

Charli XCX's name had been floating around since the announcement, with critics saying she would've been a natural choice for the category. In 2022, she released her highly successful album 'Crash', which peaked at #7 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the chart for three weeks.
