Jaguar chats to Grimes about AI, the future of music and her infamous Boiler Room set

"I'm still pinching myself that this one happened..."

Jaguar has released a special episode on her UTOPIA Talks podcast featuring an interview with Grimes.

The DJ, journalist and BBC Introducing presenter sat down with Grimes at the International Music Summit in Ibiza, for an insightful conversation about the future of the music industry and how artificial intelligence is transforming it.

The 'Miss Anthropocene' singer recently went on record to say that she will split 50 percent royalties on "any successful AI generated song" that uses her voice. Speaking about AI consent and petitioning to Spotify, Grimes told Jaguar: "I think it's good to have consent. It wouldn't personally bother me, but I just still think it's good to respect people, like if they don't want that... It is a lot, you are like foregoing creative control. And so you sort of have to be like open to that. I think there's systems that can make it a bit easier."

"Like we really want a petition to Spotify to, you know, it's like you have your top tracks and then your new your albums and then your new releases and features. Like if they made also an AI section, then it would be easier to like to compartmentalise that stuff. And then people could also understand that it's not like the artist's outputting and it becomes less confusing and quality control I think would be a bit easier."

In the new episode, Grimes also shares her thoughts on why copyright is a bad thing, reveals more about her new project, Elf.Tech, and explains what really happened with her infamous Boiler Room which has disappeared off the internet.

The Boiler Room in question went down in history back in 2013 for enraging techno purists. Billed to do a summer DJ set at Richie Hawtin's house in Ibiza, Grimes played a mostly a Top 40 rundown from her iTunes playlist, including tracks like 'All I Want For Christmas'.

"We got it taken down because it was so extreme when I was getting so many death threats at the time, which is now so funny," she reveals.  "It did encourage me to learn how to DJ properly. It was a fear based endeavour, but still now very useful."

UTOPIA TALKS is available to listen to on all podcast platforms.
