10 Best Remixes that Outshined the Originals according to Tim Sweeney

"Remixes are the perfect combination of paying tribute to a track while completely transforming it into something new — and sometimes, even better than the original."

Tim Sweeney’s journey as a DJ reflects his deep passion for music and connection to club culture. With mentorships under legends like Steinski and James Murphy at DFA Records, he honed his craft and became a fixture in New York’s music scene, known for his empathetic, transformative DJ sets. His iconic radio show, Beats in Space, now on Apple Music 1, continues to showcase cutting-edge mixes from global talent.

His next step comes as Apple today launches three new live global radio stations - Apple Música Uno, Apple Music Club, and Apple Music Chill - which you can listen to for free, without a subscription, on Apple Music Radio.

As a guide on Apple Music Club, Sweeney will help to bring the energy of dance floors worldwide to life 24/7, featuring exclusive sets from top artists like Honey Dijon and Jamie xx, and legendary collectives such as CircoLoco and Tomorrowland.

To celebrate, Tim Sweeney has selected 10 of the best remixes that outshine the original tracks, spotlighting his expert ear for transformative music.

"Remixes have always been a big part of what I love about DJing," Tim says. "They’re this perfect combination of paying tribute to a track while completely transforming it into something new — and sometimes, even better than the original. With my Apple Music show 'Beats In Space' I’m constantly digging for tracks and remixes that surprise me. This list is a celebration of those moments where the remix becomes the star."

Listen to Tim's selections in his bespoke Apple Music playlist below.

1. Donna Summer - “I Feel Love” (Patrick Cowley Mega Mix)

"The original art of the remix starting back in 1978. Patrick Cowley took Donna Summer’s groundbreaking disco track and extended it into a 15-minute odyssey, adding synthesizers and effects that transformed it into a Hi-NRG masterpiece. Hypnotic and timeless anthem."

2. Le Tigre - “Deceptacon” (DFA Remix by Tim Goldsworthy & James Murphy for the DFA)

"This remix captures everything that made DFA’s early work so special. Tim Goldsworthy and James Murphy took Le Tigre’s raw, punky energy and turned it into a dancefloor hit. I was lucky enough to be in the studio during some of those early DFA sessions, and this remix always stood out as something magical."

3. Faze Action - “In the Trees” (Carl Craig C2 Remix #4)

"Carl Craig is a true master at the art of the remix. I could fill this list with just examples of him taking tracks to another dimension. The original Faze Action track is great, but Carl turns on the Detroit techno button and everyone on the dancefloor has their hands in the air."

4. The MFA - “The Difference It Makes” (Superpitcher Mix)

"This remix hits every time. Superpitcher took The MFA’s minimal original and infused it with his usual techno-dandy warmth, making a timeless classic. Always love playing this one."

5. Shit Robot - “Simple Things (Work It Out)” (Todd Terje Version)

"What’s a remix list without Todd Terje? He brings pure disco joy with his version of ‘Simple Things’—it’s funky, uplifting, and just makes you want to dance."

6. Gwen Guthrie - “Padlock” (Larry Levan Mix)

"You know I look for Larry Levan’s name on any release. He’s a disco genius and you hear how he takes a track and turns it into a Paradise Garage classic. Extending sections, dubbing, and generally taking it deeper."

7. My Bloody Valentine - “Soon” (Andrew Weatherall Mix)

"Too many legendary remixes from Weatherall. Here he takes My Bloody Valentine’s shoegaze anthem and turns it into a masterpiece for the club."

8. The Sabres of Paradise - “Smokebelch II” (David Holmes Mix)

"David Holmes took the ambient original and turned it into a 14 minute long euphoric rave classic."

9. Ian Pooley - “Chord Memory” (Daft Punk Remix)

"Daft Punk adding their French touch to this one from Ian Pooley. Adding that signature filtered funk and taking things to another level."

10. Alice Smith - “Love Endeavor” (Maurice Fulton Remix)

"Maurice Fulton is a genius. Always one of my favourite producers who will come out with something unexpected. He turns in Balearic bliss on this remix."
