Surgeon live in Amsterdam

Birmingham, UK, resident Anthony Child, who records and DJs under the name Surgeon has been releasing the kind of icy, hard, dark records that the English are famous for not doing since the mid-90s. Hard electronica is better suited, traditionally, to landmasses to the west or east, but Surgeon’s masterful brand of futurist music softened slightly with the release of the astounding ‘Breaking The Frame’, one of the best albums of this year, which explored the more emotive, ambient sides of sound. He’s also, as one would expect, a very accomplished DJ, as the below set, recorded live in Amsterdam and consisting entirely of tracks released in the last 12 months, goes some way to proving.

The concept of Ben Sims and Kirk Degiorgio’s Machine night is to play only new music, not relying on familiar classics to move the crowd. After Sandrien and Kirk Degiorgio I played my set. None of the music I played was more than a year old. As before, I really enjoyed playing at Trouw and the crowd were great. Following the set wherever it went.
