Gabriel Gifford's first single from psych-soul project

About being left behind and stuck in the dark

Berlin-Bristol based Gabriel Gifford’s first single from his new EP features Maya Law and Freya Roy, who collaborate to create a soulful blend of jazz and neo-soul on ‘Cold Too’. ‘The single is an extension of Gabriel Gifford’s already-impressive discography, that spans jazz and soul fused electronica, mastering each genre every time. Cleo Soul and Sault fans are going to love the angelic harmonies from collaborator Freya Roy and Maya Law’s chestier lead.

This is the first track from the multi-instrumentalist and producer’s forthcoming sophomore EP, ‘Daffodils in Transit’, due for release on the 3rd September. The artist counts Nicolas Jaar, Danger Mouse and Mark Ronson amongst his influences and has collaborated with Harvey Causon and Lucy Lu on previous projects.

String synths interweave with funky guitar plucking on ‘Cold Too’, which is ‘the product of a musician in lockdown’ but the only track on the EP that was recorded together in person – the rest of the EP was carefully put together over Zoom calls. Describing the process, Gabriel says “All three of us were jamming in the room, Maya on vocals, me on bass and production, Freya on guitar and backing vocals.”

Maya adds “‘Cold Too’ for me is about being left behind… Both people wanting something new without saying it aloud. Being stuck in the dark.”

‘Cold Too’ is out now on Charlatan Jazz via DMY Artists.
