Premiere: Reader's 'Say It Like You Mean It' video is an ode to all the raves we can't go to

"Even though we can’t physically be with our friends and loved ones right now, we’re together in spirit"

South London’s Reader is someone who keeps things DIY. A classically-trained multi-instrumentalist, she self-produces and self-releases all her own music. Hot on the heels of ‘Back To You’, a collaboration with Ninja Tune artist TSHA, she returns with ‘Say It Like You Mean It’, a bedroom pop track she describes as “a happy accident”, but also “the most uplifting track I’ve written so far. It’s about getting frustrated with people around you who are all chat and no action. Like, if you’re so bothered by something, then do something about it.”

It comes with an equally DIY video – which we’re premiering below – which she filmed with her housemates during lockdown in their South London flat. “As we had to film it quarantine-style, I wanted it to be an ode to all the events we can’t go to right now because of lockdown,” Reader says.

“So we projected stock footage of old ’90s raves, and got other people involved by getting them to send in footage of them dancing to the song. I guess the sentiment is that even though we can’t physically be with our friends and loved ones right now, we’re together in spirit.”
