Tommy Four Seven - Sevals [MP3]

No hi-hats, no claps, no synthesizers. No traditional percussion other than the low frequency pummel of a kick drum. This is techno at its most tribal. Although, the stark, industrial, concrete march that is Tommy Four Seven’s debut album ‘Primate’ is largely composed from warping that most organic of things – field recordings.

Tommy Four Seven is a British producer living in Berlin. Like Bristol-hailing but Berlin-based musician Emika (who incidentally lends some vocals to this record), he also started out as a music technology student., which may be responsible for a similar ability to turn natural sound into new textures and atmospheres. A mix of micro and macro sound management. It’s controlled, the 4/4 rhythm sometimes deviated from, but a bristling, tight tension always held. The construction of a dark, industrial, parallel space to the one those initial field recordings come from.
