Mount Kimbie art installation swept away by storm in central London

The 16-foot wide orbs were filmed flying down Tottenham Court Road

Mount Kimbie‘s Kai Campos has said he is “heartbroken” after high winds caused an art installation created for their new record to tumble down Tottenham Court Road.

Created by the artist Tom Shannon, ‘Four World Set’ opened last Sunday and was arranged to remain in St. Giles Square until the release of the duo’s double album ‘MK 3.5: Die Cuts | City Planning’, out this Friday.

However on November 1 the four 16-foot wide orbs to come loose from their concrete base and ripped through the streets after Storm Claudio’s strong winds passed through central London.

“Heartbroken to report that the extreme winds in London last night took down Tom’s beautiful ‘Four World Set’,” Kai wrote in a statement on Instagram. “Seeing it completed on Sunday night was one of the most exciting things I’ve been involved with. The fact that it was so out in the open and public was one of the best parts of the work and when seeing the joy and intrigue it brought to everyone who walked through the square. It felt like it had a life of its own and one that was just getting started. I’m absolutely gutted that more people won’t get to see it this week.”

Constructed in New York, ‘Four World Set’ featured four mirrored orbs arranged in a pyramid structure and resulted in an optical illusion. Mount Kimbie are set to host an album release party at The Lower Third on Friday November 4, featuring a number of special guest DJs to perform alongside Kai Campos throughout the night.

“Trying to take the positives from the experience and I will certainly always remember the feeling there on Sunday night,” he added. “I’m really glad I went down to see it last night as well, was really great and people were still approaching it even as the rain came down. We of course had prepared for bad weather and strong winds but just got really unlucky last night. It was amazing, but too brief.

“Massive thank you to everyone involved, it has been a massive team effort and such a pleasure working on it. I’m sure we will do more in the future.”
