The 10 Best Funk Tracks according to Carl Craig

Carl Craig is a legendary Detroit techno DJ and producer but he's never limited himself to any one style of music, in fact he launched his record label Planet E with an EP titled '4 Jazz Funk Classics' just to ram the point home and set the agenda for his career to come. Since then he has recorded under a number of aliases including 69, BFC, C2, Innerzone Orchestra, No Boundaries, Psyche, Paperclip People and Tres Demented, produced over 100 remixes including for artists including LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip and Junior Boys and his label is now 27 years young. He's also still a globally respected DJ and in advance of his rare all night long funk and disco set at Cocoon, Pacha in Ibiza on June 13th Carl has chosen his ten favourite funk tracks.

Bobby Byrd – I Know You Got Soul

CC: "Solid stuff, covering both standard soul from the '60s and hard funk from the early '70s."

Zapp & Roger – More Bounce To The Ounce

"Funk, funk, funk from start to finish!!!!!"

Parliament – Theme From The Black Hole

"Toast to the BOOTAY – definition of funk, doesn't get better than this."

Funkadelic – One Nation Under A Groove

"A funk delicacy, supple, lithe and funky. At the time of its release, it was a perfect combo of soul past and present and has a chorus that is to die for every time."

Slave – Just A Touch Of Love

"Ohio produced the best funk bands in the 1970's fusing funk, R&B and dance. Just a touch of love is a perfect example of the golden age of funk and has an absolutely hypnotic bass line and thumping beat that has been sampled so many times, it is impossible to count."

Sly & The Family Stone – If You Want Me To Stay

"Sexy, seductive baby making music. Sly wrote this song and said about it: 'If you want me to stay, let me know. Otherwise, syonara.' A Prince piece of music before Prince."

The Bar-Kays – Whitehouseorgy

"The Bar-Kays' piece of greatness – energetic, telepathic, hard-driving funk."

Ikenga Superstars of Africa – Soffry Soffry Catch Monkey

"Afro-funk and Afro-beat, hypnotic and blaaaack!"

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 – Think Africa

"A powerful example of Afrobeat as a form of protest – "The walking, talking struggle of my people" (Sean Kuti)."

The Night Liters – K-Jee

"An all time jazz and funk masterpiece. Philly sound at its best."

Carl Craig plays an all night long funk and disco set in room 2 at Cocoon, Pacha Ibiza on Wednesday 13th June.
