Today's Sonar tips: 18/06
- Global Communication
(Sony/Dedicated / UK)
Producers of what is widely considered to be the greatest ambient house album of all time, 1990’s ’76:14’, Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard will be playing a rare, nurturing live set, hopefully lulling us back to life.
18 June | SonarHall | 17:00 - Yelawolf
Yela’s brash, gutsy rapping that crosses Seasick Steve with Clipse is one of the most unusual propositions in modern hip hop, and Sonar’s booking of the Eminem-bless Alabaman will be fascinating.
18 June | SonarVillage by Estrella Damm | 17:15 - CosminTRG
(50Weapons / RO)
Romanian producer and RBMA-attendant CosminTRG’s blinding grasp of rhythm and sound, and his bracing futurism are sights to behold – make sure you get down to see the 50Weapons/Rush Hour-producer’s show.
18 June | Red Bull Music Academy at SonarDôme | 19:15 - Shangaan Electro
(Honest Jon’s / ZA)
Tsonga Shangaan are a people from South Africa and they use drum machines to make tunes of extraordinary colour and speed. Their release on Honest Jons brought them to wider attention and the producer and vocalist Nozinja, accompanied by the marvellous DJ Spoko will be joined Tshetsha Boys masked dancers today.
18 June | SonarVillage by Estrella Damm | 19:15 - Actress (Werk / UK)
Darren Cunningham’s witty, artful command of underground techno and house came to full fruition on 2010’s ‘Splazsh’, and his influence on a whole generation of producers cannot be overstated.
18 June | SonarHall | 20:30 - Hype Williams (UK-DE)
Inga Coupland and D.Blunt are two sardonic anti-musicians from Dalston in east London currently living in Berlin who make music that sounds like dub, early grime and romanticism, and they released the year’s best album so far, ‘One Nation’. Their shows are situations, happenings, raw events, and cannot be over-tipped.
18 June | SonarComplex | 21:00 - Janelle Monáe (The Wondaland Arts Society / US)
One of the more interesting soul stars to emerge from the US in recent years, Janelle Monáe’s SF concept The Arch Android will be the perfect ease-in to the mania of 2011’s final Sonar by Night.
18 June | SonarPub | 23:30 - Surgeon (UK)
Birmingham native Surgeon’s dark, unnervingly precise productions will be a bracing moment after Magnetic Man’s mega show at Sonar Club.
18 June | SonarClub | 04:15 - Numbers presents
Glasgow’s Numbers label is one of the best examples of a community-run dance label that manages to strike a balance between the imperiatives of the modern and having a fun time. Redinhho, Spencer, Deadboy, Jackmaster, Lory D and Chelis will be DJing throughout the night, make sure you’re involved.
SonarLab, from 02:00 - Night Slugs presents
Another great example is London’s grime-influenced Night Slugs – and Egyptrixx / L-Vis 1990 b2b Bok Bok / Noaipre will all be playing to see in the morning.
SonarCar, from 04:00
