Heidi Boualili Turns Pain Into Power on Debut Album 'What I Didn’t Know Then'
Southend-based singer-songwriter Heidi Boualili has released her debut album, 'What I Didn’t Know Then,' a striking and deeply personal collection that charts her journey from outsider to rising independent artist.
Available now, the album serves as a reflection on growth, identity and survival, drawing from Boualili’s experiences growing up as an openly LGBTQ+ young person navigating life in a working-class community. Described by the artist as “a quiet conversation between who I was and who I’m becoming”, the record captures the difficult lessons, setbacks and moments of hope that have shaped her path.
Music has long been a lifeline for Boualili. Inspired by the storytelling of artists such as Lauryn Hill and The Notorious B.I.G., she began writing her own lyrics as a child and turned to songwriting during a turbulent adolescence marked by severe bullying. A chance intervention from a music teacher helped redirect her future, nurturing a talent that would eventually lead to viral success and a growing national profile.
That momentum has continued to build, with support from Jack Saunders and Clara Amfo, chart success, television exposure and headline shows across her hometown.
Led by tracks including 'Un Poco Loco (All the Time)' and 'City U Took From Me,' What I Didn’t Know Then finds Boualili embracing vulnerability while looking firmly towards the future.
Blending heartfelt songwriting with themes of resilience and self-acceptance, the album marks the arrival of a distinctive new voice in UK pop.
'What I Didn't Know Then' is out now via 3 Beat Productions Ltd / Ansatz Music Group.
