Illum Sphere - h808er

Illum Sphere talents are far-reaching – resident and co-founder of Manchester’s impeccable Hoya:Hoya club night, genuinely one of the best DJs operating right now, go-to remixer and, with his highest-profile solo release to date, a producer worth keeping tabs on. Birthday and h808er are out now on Young Turks, and both are monsters. Birthday can loosely be described as a cut-up house banger, but flipside cut h808er is probably the superior of the two. It starts off like an unearthed proto-electroclash gem from 2001 (this is a good thing) and is, as the name implies, heavy on Roland’s inescapable rhythm box. The track gets turned on its head halfway through when it ventures into odd and unexpectedly euphoric territory, but despite this, it somehow keeps its momentum intact. It’s not really like much else out there and is a big breath of fresh air – tuck into it below.
