Portico Quartet - 4096 Colours (Konx-om-Pax remix)
Jazz experimentalists Portico Quartet, whose eponymous third album released last year saw them delve deeper into exploring electronic sounds, released ‘Live/Remix’ this week. As the name hints at, it’s made up of a collection of live recordings and a slew of remixes from a solid range of producers such as SBTRKT, LV and DVA – as well as this eight minute mind-opening reinterpretation of 4096 Colours from Konx-om-Pax.
The musician and well-respected visual artist, who we interviewed last summer just before the release of his debut album for Planet Mu, realigns the original’s sparse atmospherics with smudgy synth sequences for a retro-futuristic, outer-space vibe. Hey Portico Quartet, how’s your 2013 been so far?
Portico Quartet: “Hey, pretty good thanks. Just been getting back into the studio, and starting to work on some new stuff.”
What were the main reasons for putting out a live album now?
PQ: “It’s a way to share with people where we’re at and document how the music’s evolved since the release of the third album last year._
While we wouldn’t want to promote any bias on your part, are there any other of the remixes you want to give a special mention to?
PQ: “We love them all…! But right now i’m really feeling the Will Ward remix of Window Seat – he’s got an EP coming out soon on Deadplate. DVA’s remix of Laker Boo is a personal favourite… Luke Abbott’s reworking of Rubidium is great too.”
Any new musical discoveries you’d care to share with us?
PQ: “It’s not exactly a new discovery but I’ve been really enjoying Kyle Hall in the last few days, such a talented dude and a great breadth of output. Looking forward to his album coming out soon. Also I never really listened to it, just skimmed it before, but I’ve been delving into ‘Einstein On The Beach’ by Phillip Glass. Bed is incredible.”
Real World Productions released ‘Live/Remix’ on the 25th March, and Portico Quartet will play London’s Koko on the 17th April.
