Premiere: Guava draws for sky-high breaks on 'SZD Orion'
Fake news has been rife throughout the pandemic, one example of which being the claim that swans and dolphins had been spotted swimming in Venice’s canals. This bogus story (which actually turned out to be sort of true in the end) was the title inspiration for Berlin-based producer Guava’s latest EP, ‘The Dolphins Are Back In Venice’.
Forthcoming on Control Freak Recordings, the club-ready EP finds collaborations with some of the cream of the UK’s bass producers, Breaka (listen to his Dummy Mix here) and LUXE.
We’re premiering EP track ‘SZD Orion’ below, a track that comes complete with skittering hi hats and cosmic, floating synths – sonically apt for a track that was inspired by flight. “I always think it’s essential to start with a track title before making a piece of music,” Guava says. “I’d recently been reading about the 1972 Gliding World Championships, in which Polish pilot Jan Wróblewski won flying a glider called the SZD-Orion. I thought it was an excellent title for a piece of music.
“Most of my tunes are inspired by flight; in the same way, Kraftwerk used the ‘Trans Europe Express’ to convey a sonic narrative. When I write music, there is always a theme and a story that I’m trying to tell. In this piece, you can hear Jan gliding from cloud to cloud with the bubbling synthesisers representing the turbulence and air moving around him.”
