Sofie Royer Announces New Album and Shares Reflective New Single 'Sesquicentennial'
Sofie Royer has announced her fourth studio album, 'before/after,' due for release on 4 September via Stones Throw Records.
Alongside the announcement, Royer has shared new single 'Sesquicentennial,' a dreamy and introspective track inspired by ideas of repetition, fate and personal transformation. Written after a performance at SXSW, the song takes its title from a word Royer spotted on a bumper sticker during a sweltering Texas afternoon, prompting reflections on the cyclical patterns that shape our lives and relationships.
The track arrives with a self-shot video filmed during a recent trip to China. Blending travelogue-style imagery with intimate snapshots of everyday life, the visual nods to the atmosphere of Lost in Translation while maintaining Royer’s distinctive personal touch.
Described by the artist as an exploration of the conflict between who we were and who we hope to become, 'before/after' finds Royer turning her sharp observational lens inward. Across the record, themes of self-reflection, recurring behaviours and personal accountability take centre stage, with the artist describing the album's central struggle as “you versus you”.
A conservatory-trained violinist who later helped build Boiler Room's Los Angeles presence before joining Stones Throw, Royer has steadily evolved into one of alternative pop's most distinctive voices. On 'before/after,' she continues that trajectory, combining sophisticated songwriting with polished production and a blend of wit, vulnerability and cultural commentary.
'Sesquicentennial' is out now via Stones Throw Records.
