Girls I Rate are on the hunt for the next hitmaker

The platform has launched a competition, GETHEARD, in a bid to get more women into the music industry

Girls I Rate, the platform founded by Grammy-winning songwriter Carla-Marie Williams in 2016, has launched GETHEARD, a new competition in partnership with the PRS Foundation and PRS For Music.

Currently, only 18.5% of the total PRS membership is female, and Girls I Rate are helping young female songwriters and producers get their music heard by industry key players and win prizes to kickstart their careers.

To enter, applicants must submit one original track written or composed by themselves. The top ten applicants will be listened to by an A&R panel of industry experts, who will then select the best three.

The judging panel includes YouTube’s Sheniece Charway, Spotify’s Safiya Lambie-Knight, DownTown’s Davina Merchant, Since ’93’s Riki Bleau, BMG’s Felix Howard and PRS’s Michelle Escoffery.

Prizes on offer include a £1,000, £2,000, or £3,000 bursary, a place on an engineering and production course at London’s Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, subscriptions to Mixcloud, Audio Technica Headphones and more.

Women aged 16-30 can submit their music now at girlsirate.com before the end of May 31st 2021.

Last week, Radio 1’s Jaguar announced a new, free training programme titled Future1000 that aims to introduce 1000 female, trans and non-binary under-18s into electronic music by 2022.
