Ivory Tower
What’s the story?
Chilly Gonzales surprises again with electro pop soundtrack to his cinematic debut, Ivory Tower, a feature length film about the fraternal rivalry of two chess champs (Gonzales & Tiga) as they fight for supremacy and the affection of a hot chick (Peaches).
What does it sound like?
Piano house gets a VIP treatment from Gonzales but sometimes slips into surreal soundtrack terriority. Boy Noize production give the album a Euro dancefloor sheen. Only Gonzales’s comic chatshow host-type vocals mean this album would sound out of place at the closing beach parties of Ibiza.
Highlights?
Irresistable beats and snigger-inducing witty lyricism of The Grudge and I Am Europe “I’m a shrugging moustache, wearing a Speedo tuxedo… ”.
Lowlights?
Rococo Channel and Pixel Paxel feel like filler fodder and only apt for a soundtrack. To feel it’s full force we believe movie viewing is essential. Also, it doesn’t sound like diplomatic techno, unfortunately.
Verdict?
Some nice moves, and some that are a bit stale, mate.
