Madonna's Super Bowl collaboration with MIA and Nicki Minaj!

Giant of music lead cheers ahead of big American sporting event.

Madonna, MIA and Nicki Minaj are leading the Super Bowl half-time celebrations on Sunday, which is sort of like the American version of a coronation, but for singers, and once a year. Here’s the video trailer, featuring quarterbacks and guns and three of the most important people in pop. It’s currently at 307 views, but is unlikely to stay there.

Interesting things to note:

  • It’s a big, proper pop video. We like found-footage or fan videos, but it’s nice to have a bit of money spent on our eyeballs. Makes us feel all special.
  • Still, money doesn’t buy you quality, and the concept of noir-musical with quarterbacks and overt references to Madonna’s past is a little messy. Plus, the “Ooh, love is fun but so is going out and dancing” theme is a bit tired, let’s be honest.
  • I know we say this about every song (even ones that Nicki is not on), but there should have been more Minaj.
  • MIA can actually begin to hold her own against these titans of modern pop. A couple of years ago, her nonchalant, “chicken special deal and loads of burger sauce please, no funny business” rapping would have seen her trampled by Minaj, but here, you can hear her taking aim at the pop hip hop crown that Bad Girls was so overtly eyeing.
  • It’s the first single from Madonna’s new album ‘MDNA’, produced by William Orbit (of ‘Ray Of Light’ fame) and, in more :/ news, Benni Bennassi. Though we can quibble about this single by at least two and half geniuses of pop music not being the work of genius aside, it’s still pretty good, and leaves us wanting to hear the album.
