The Independent Label Market returns to Spitalfields this weekend

The very special Christmas market will host the cream of the UK's independent imprints, with exclusives available from Planet Mu, Lex, Ninja Tune and more.

If you fancy hitting up a market this weekend, you’d be a fool not to head out to Spitalfields in East London for the Independent Label Market’s Christmas extravaganza, which looks set to be an unmissable way to round off another fine year for UK independent labels.

This Saturday and Sunday (1st and 2nd December) between 11am and 5pm, Spitalfields will again be transformed into a celebration of the UK’s independent label scene, with over 50 of the very finest imprints to set up stalls stocked with a load of exclusives, oddities and rarities. On Saturday, you’ll be able to pick Grimes test pressings from the No Pain In Pop stall and yellow vinyl limited editions of Roots Manuva’s upcoming Banana Skank EP from Big Dada, and Sunday will see Acid Jazz unearth a heap of rare vinyl, while Memphis Industries will be offering a £10 “lucky dip” for bundles of 3 LPs or 5 CDs from the archive.

As if that didn’t all sound good enough, the event is bound to be worth the trip just for the chance to see a load of record label bosses wearing santa hats, and there is also the promise of some “special artist appearances”, too. We spoke with ILM co-founder Joe Daniel about what makes the market so special:

“Independent Label Market is a great place to find out about music from the people that produced it. It’s more communal and engaging than looking at Amazon recommendations or Discog searches, and a nice reminder of the physical in an industry that’s becoming very oriented towards the digital. Be sure to have a Gluhwein with Horst from !K7 and get yourself a hand spray-painted Fake Blood record!”
