Cuushe - Airy Me

The soundtrack to your dreams tonight comes from Japanese artist Cuushe (aka Mayuko Hitotsuyanagi) and her positively gorgeous song Airy Me. It comes from her debut album 'Red Rocket Telepathy', released on flau records – the head-turning Tokyo-based label. This is an updated version of the song, courtesy of Yasuhiko Fukuzono (flau boss and music-maker under the alias aus). It's accompanied by a video by young graduate Yoko Kuno, who spent two years working to create a painstakingly beautiful pencil-drawn stream-of-consciousness, as weird as it is pretty with Akira-esque gruesome body transformations.

It seems the perfect match for Cuushe's sounds. Moving from thickets of infinitely reverberating guitar twangs and flowing-river synths, the song creeps into what could almost be an elegy – a lamenting slow-march of electric piano chords and slow, thorny beats. Inhabiting the spirit-like world between pop, chillwave and shoegaze, her voice is a distinctive mélange of breathy and pleading, husky and bright and beset with insectoid whistlings.

flau records will release Cuushe's new album 'Butterfly Case' on 23rd September.
