Gangnam Style is the first ever YouTube clip to reach one billion views

PSY’s Gangnam Style video, widely credited with bringing K-pop to an mainstream international audience, just officially became the first ever YouTube video to receive over one billion views.

In what turned out to be an inescapable phenomenon of 2012, Gangnam Style has already broken the record for the “most-liked” YouTube video in history, become the first South Korean song to go to the top of the UK charts and, bizarrely, inspired Ai Weiwei to re-interpret it. It now adds “first video to be watched so many times that 1/6 of the earth’s population could potentially have seen it” to that list of accolades.
