If there’s one word that crops up a lot when listening to Australian producer Mutant Joe‘s music, it’s “doom”. The Brisbane artist originally bubbled up via the elusive underground trap scene, aligning his influences which span ’80s horror, jungle, gabber, techno, and industrial. After making his debut on Manchester’s Natural Sciences with ‘Home Invasion Anthems’ (which featured on our Best Albums of 2019 list), four of his tracks were hand-selected by TNGHT for their coveted Essential Mix. Mutant Joe followed this record up with 2020’s ‘Operation Chaos’, looping in Canadian rapper Freddie Dredd on vocals and turning out something more dancefloor-minded, drawing on breaks and footwork. More recently, his heart rate-elevating ‘Cortisol’ EP found him playing with more experimental, abstract electronica, all underscored by his characteristic darkness.
Not one to slow down when it comes to work rate, ‘Dream Corrupter‘ is his forthcoming album, thematically based around sleep paralysis and nightmares and packed with industrial textures, earth-shattering breaks, clanking bass and nails-on-blackboard sonics. And it slaps.
In anticipation of the album, which drops tomorrow, Mutant Joe has turned in a noisy, abrasive belter of a Dummy Mix that is the sum of his influences. “This mix references a lot of my biggest early inspirations,” he says, “the tracks and artists that got me into making music in the first place. It feels great to finally get to a point where I can effectively explore these aesthetics and tones in the way I’ve always wanted to with ‘Dream Corrupter’.” Gear up for an assault on the senses and and press play below.
