NOZOMI Spotlight Luo Samples on 'Ohara'
Emerging production duo NOZOMI continue to make their mark on the electronic scene with Afro-house gem 'Ohara'.
The track features a captivating vocal performance sung in the Nilotic Luo language, sourced from samples recorded by composer Russ Landau during his 2001 visit to Kenyan tribal villages.
Formed of producers Jules Temple and Matt Rist, NOZOMI explain that the single was "born from one of those rare studio sessions where everything falls right into place."
NOZOMI are inspired by eclectic, leftfield dance acts such as Four Tet, Bonobo, O'Flynn and KOKOKO!
As can be heard on 'Ohara', and debut single 'Jezero', the duo's style recontextualises world music samples into electronic productions.
The NOZOMI project began as a sync project for moving image, so Temple and Rife are motivated by visual prompts as key part of their creative process. The result is a cinematic, transportive sound accompanied by a series audio-reactive visualisers, a nod to the pair's love for sci-fi imagery and aesthetics.
'Ohara' is out now via Blooper Nova.
