Amsterdam's De School is closing down
Amsterdam nightclub De School is reportedly closing its doors for good.
The venue joins a long list of establishments to have undergone a period of financial hardship since shutting down due to the coronavirus pandemic.
While De School’s café and restaurant will remain open, the nightclub section is unlikely to get up and running again.
Before lockdown, the venue had been facing criticism for instances of sexual assault and racist door policies.
Senior nightclub staff hosted a live-streamed Q&A to respond to allegations against them, such as a lack of diversity when booking DJs and an incident where security solicited sex from queer clubbers found with drugs, in exchange for not reporting them to the police.
The panel had laid out plans to add two women of colour to their team which was otherwise all-white, however, those who raised the criticism concluded that the venue had ultimately failed to live up to its standards of being a safe place.
