Banksy rumoured to have bought historic Glastonbury pub for £1 million
Banksy is rumoured to have purchased a pub in the Glastonbury area.
It's believed that the prolific graffiti artist is part of the group that has purchased and renovated The Crown pub in Pilton, close to Glastonbury Festival's Worthy Farm site.
Originally built in the 1600s, the historic pub reportedly cost £1 million to purchase. It had been shut for a number of years before a renovation took place, and was re-opened fully in November 2022.
According to Mixmag, the pub is now decorated in art by Banksy and his friend Dorcas Casey, whose work featured in the anonymous artist’s Dismaland Exhibition. Banksy-style decor covers the walls of the building, including a squirrel in a glass case playing pool as well as the pub’s signage depicting a fallen over crown and wonky text.
The Sun reported the news, quoting an anonymous “source”. They said: “Banksy loved the idea of being part of Glastonbury and its right on message. It’s also a gateway to all the music superstars who attend. He has put a decent chunk of money in.”
The pub's current manager Owain Powell denies the Banksy-related rumours, claiming: “I bought the pub with a couple of friends.” Whether or not one of those friends are the elusive Banksy, locals in the area have enjoyed the speculation but are also happy to see the historic pub thriving once again.
