Dave calls Boris Johnson a "real racist" during Brit Awards performance

The rapper delivered the powerful performance at this year's ceremony after winning Album of the Year

At the Brit Awards last night, UK rapper Dave scooped Album of the Year with ‘Psychodrama’, which also won the Mercury Prize last year.

Performing ‘Psychodrama’ cut ‘Black’ at the ceremony, the South London rapper tacked on new lyrics to the track, delivering a powerful critique of the UK government and society.

In it, the 21-year-old hit out at Boris Johnson, saying: “It is racist, whether or not it feels racist, the truth is our prime minister’s a real racist / They say – ‘you should be grateful, we’re the least racist’ / I say the least racist is still racist.”

Home Secretary Priti Patel responded to Dave’s criticism of the Prime Minister, telling BBC Breakfast: “I don’t know how much [Dave] knows about the prime minister and whether he actually has met the prime minister or knows the prime minister.

“I work with the prime minister, I know Boris Johnson very well, no way is he a racist, so I think that is a completely wrong comment and it’s the wrong assertion to make against our prime minister.”

At the 2018 Brit Awards, Stormzy famously demanded “where’s the money for Grenfell?”, and Dave followed this up two years on, stating: “Grenfell victims still need accommodation.”

Dave also tackled the current black experience and called for support of the Windrush generation: “And we still need support for the Windrush generation / Reparations for the time our people spent on plantations,” as well as calling out the UK media’s treatment of Meghan Markle: “If you don’t want to get it, then you’re never gonna get how the news treats Kate versus how they treated Meghan.”

He also paid tribute to Jack Merritt, the prison rehabilitation worker killed in the 2019 London Bridge terror attack.
