Obaro Ejimiwe is a dependable man; his second album as Ghostpoet, ‘Some Say I So I Say Light’, is shaping up to be a natural evolution from his Mercury-nominated debut ‘Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam’, with all his listless delivery, tragically on-the-money lyrics, clattering percussion and electronic glimmers intact. What’s changed, though – as you can hear on the new single Meltdown, debuted on Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show and ripped for your listening pleasure below – is the introduction of a more expansive and expensive sound. With the addition of plenty of collaborators, including Woodpecker Wooliams, whose soft vocal presence can be heard on Meltdown, it’s a much more luxurious record, and nowhere is that more obvious than in the swell of strings towards the end of this track, carrying Ejimiwe’s heartfelt mumblings to the transcendent level they always strived for. Ghostpoet’s back, and he’s got new, orchestral swagger.
