Gilles Peterson introduces Nick Mulvey

The DJ suggests that you listen to this "Nick Drake meets Steve Reich" singer-songwriter.

Nick Mulvey has already picked up international acclaim as part of the Mercury Prize-nominated Portico Quartet, but it’s his dense, intricate and elegant work as a solo artist that tastemaker Gilles Peterson thinks should be getting everyone’s attention. Mulvey’s EP ‘Trellis’ is out now on Fictionread on to find out why it’s a record worth giving some time to.

Gilles: “Nick Mulvey’s show at the house of St Barnabas last year was one of the true highlights of 2012. Formerly I knew him as a key member of the Portico Quartet – he played the hang with them – but his talent as a singer-songwriter in the Nick-Drake-meets-Steve-Reich category I was unaware of until the morning I received a copy of River Lea, which I subsequently released on Brownswood Bubblers 8. But the gig was what really did it for me, not only a controlled vocalist but also a highly accomplished guitarist. He spent a while upgrading his technique in Cuba and his time has come, especially now that I’m listening to his first EP for Fiction – watch him!”

Nick Mulvey will perform at Gilles Peterson’s annual Worldwide Awards on Saturday 19th January at KOKO. Get more information and tickets here – includes added Neneh Cherry.
