Kim Ki O - Dogs

Turkish experimental pop with pinch of post-punk, and a strange sadness.

Kim Ki O are Ekin Sanaç and Berna Göl, two old school friends who, on reuniting six years ago, started a band. The Istanbul-based duo make experimental pop with post-punk’s rhythmic swagger. Dogs is taken from their new album ‘Grounds’ on Parisian label Lentonia Records and has a strange sadness beneath the bounce. “All we’ve ever been interested in doing is making a record which encapsulates a mood and a time,” says a voice buried deep in the mix, which – a quick search suggests – was taken from a 1994 interview with Manic Street Preachers’ Richey Edwards, the year before he disappeared. The song ends on a loop of Edwards’ saying, “Go and live with my dogs somewhere.” And suddenly the source of the sadness is clear.

Lentonia Records released Kim Ki O’s ‘Grounds’ on 4th March 2013.
