Odd Rumblings - Ice Floe

What's in a name? Well, with little fanfare, new Brooklyn duo Odd Rumblings nail it with theirs. They do indeed sound like eerie signals bubbling up from beneath, disrupting the earth's crust with time-lapse grace. There's a whisper of Katie Stelmanis, Austra's former incarnation, and her cooly sublime Believe Me to their vibe, especially on recently posted track Ice Floe. Singer Audrea Lim explained in an email accompanying their Soundcloud link that the song was inspired by a road trip to the Arctic she took in the summer – the accompanying photo is of permafrost "taken in an ice house in a hamlet called Tuktoyaktuk" – and her memories of the experience haunt the track. Lim's ecclesiastical vocal arcs and arches over curiously round keyboard tones, almost using them as stepping stones. One to keep an ear on, for sure.
