Premiere: Elliott Power - Sink/Swim

The producer cooks up trip hop mystique and slick R&B with promising results.

Here’s something new from Londoner Elliott Power, who’s been floating about for a little while now, but is taking things to the next level with a debut release for Marathon Artists. Trunk, from side project Trill Pill, sounded uncannily like a dreamt-up take on that Damon Albarn/Tricky collaboration that never happened (Damon was set to appear on ‘Nearly God’, but creative differences put an end to the hook-up). Elliott continues to display some 90s love with Sink/Swim’s lip-curling verses, which have Tricky-shaped trip hop marks all over them. But before the padded tribal rhythms risk falling too firmly on the side of imitation, in comes the slickest of R&B choruses that send Sink/Swim off somewhere satisfyingly unexpected.
