Spotify announces that Wordle-inspired Heardle game will be discontinued
The era of the Wordle clones is officially coming to an end! The trend is dead, and Spotify isn't prepared to keep it going any longer. Yesterday, they announced that they'd be shutting down Heardle less than 10 months after acquiring the viral game.
Spotify emphasised that they'd be redirecting the attention from Heardle over to their app's music discovery features, with a spokesperson saying: "After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to say goodbye."
Users had long been complaining about bugs that started popping up after Spotify tried integrating themselves into the Heardle game, and apparently the maintenance required to fix it just wasn't worth it.
Heardle was started in February 2022 by a London-based designer as a response to the viral of success of the New York Times' Wordle. It would give users a short clip of a song and have them guess what they were hearing. The user was then provided with a limited number of skips that would let them hear more of the song before having to guess.
If you want to try your hand at the challenge, you still have time, but you'll have to be quick. Spotify will be discontinuing the game on May 5 and haven't specified whether or not it will be running in any other capacity afterwards.
