Take the first listen to your future favourite producer, WATER

This new London producer is pushing pop distillation into new percussive territory, and will be everywhere in six months.

Remember when we got really excited about Evian Christ at the end of last year? Well, that same bubbly, butterflies feeling is what we’re getting in the Dummy office right now listening to the sounds of WATER. The details, as ever, are scant: he’s based in London and has some link with new pop hope Twigs. But what I do know is that he’s a dab hand at pop distillation, something that the Tri Angle artists have made their own this past couple of years. Where Holy Other et al go for the abstract (the sad look in Britney’s eye spun across tonal waves) WATER plays with context, providing stripped back, percussive backdrops for Britney, Rihanna, Mariah and Lady Gaga in turn. There’s something incredibly fresh and organic about WATER’s touch; it feels respectful, alive. So it’s a bit of a head-scratcher why he decided to call his EP (available for free download on his site) ‘The Sluts’. It tarnishes things somewhat, but there’s no doubt he’ll have plenty of opportunities to explain himself over the coming months. For now, listen to a selection of tracks from his EP below.
