The Prodigy support campaign to save O2 Academy Brixton: "Brixton is our home"

"It is super important that it's able to continue to be a place that you can go and see bands play live..."

The Prodigy have voiced their support for the campaign to save O2 Academy Brixton.

The South London venue is facing permanent closure after the Met Police urged Lambeth council to revoke the venue's license following the death of two people in a crowd crush in December.

As reported in the Evening Standard, the Met said it had "lost confidence" in O2 Academy Brixton owners Academy Music Group (AMG) and were seeking a revocation of the licence.

Since then, an online petition has been launched to fight back against the closure and various artists have shared their concerns about the potential shutting down of the venue.

Now, The Prodigy have backed the campaign and are urging the public to support it too. Responding to a new campaign launched by the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), Save Our Scene and Brixton BID, the band took to social media to give their point of view on the matter. You can support their campaign here.

"Brixton Academy is our home," the band wrote on Twitter. "What happened there a few months ago was tragic & very serious lessons need to be learnt from it. It's the venue that has been at the heart of our band, the one that we have played the most and where fans from all around the world come to see us play."

"It is super important that it's able to continue to be a place that you can go and see bands play live," they added. "If you agree please, put your full support behind them, as we do."

The Prodigy used their headline show at O2 Academy Brixton last summer to pay tribute to the band’s former vocalist and frontman Keith Flint during a performance of ‘Firestarter’. This summer, the band are set to headline Serbia's EXIT festival.
