A video postcard from Young Fathers

At the heart of the clattering, menacing Young Fathers album ‘Tape One’ is a constant ominous undertone that threatens to overwhelm the whole thing; with its clamourous beats and snarling delivery, it’s provocative and yet restrained, never letting go of the tension that holds it together. It’s an angry, fast-paced and colourful record that feels like it’s over when it’s just getting its grip on your head.

The visual snapshot above, sent to Dummy by Kayus Bankole, captures part of that restless mosaic mentality and bubbling tension on the roads of Nigeria. Jumping from street to domesticity, from movement to stillness, and presenting a rich audio tapestry of found sounds, the minute-long recording captures something of the ferocity and character of a Young Fathers release, and feels like looking at the world through Kayus’s eyes.

Anticon released ‘Tape One’ on 14th January 2013.
