Over the last few years, Louisiana-based, but Los Angeles-bred electronica producer and live performer AF THE NAYSAYER (Amahl Abdul-Khaliq) has been quietly and confidently building himself an audience on both sides of the Atlantic and catching ears as far away as Asia. During this process, AF THE NAYSAYER’s approach has been threefold: Relentless D.I.Y touring and performance alongside the likes of Durazzo, Prism House, Sports Coach, Glitch Mob, Om Unit, Quantic, Lapalux and Young Fathers. A smart approach to collaboration and remixes. Community engagement through work with Red Bull Music Academy and Upbeat Music Academy in New Orleans.
Taken from his debut EP ‘The Autodidact Instrumentals Vol. 1’, Post is a textbook example of the West Coast G-Funk, VGM (Video Game Music) and '80s R&B informed aesthetic he’s best known for. For the music video, AF THE NAYSAYER teamed up with director Tim Driscoll to pair its purple synthesiser swirls, VGM blips and bleeps and unrepentant drum machine funk up with an equally captivating and physical visual treatment. Beyond this, Post points towards AF THE NAYSAYERS next EP ‘Armor Wing Battle Unit’, a soundtrack to an imaginary video game.
In Tim Driscoll’s words, “The concept for the Post music video stemmed from an idea I had while reading 'Slaughter House Five.' I became fascinated with the concepts of time and its relativity. So I wanted to create something where everything was always happening. That at any given moment all action would be occurring. I took these ideas to AF THE NAYSAYER, and he dug it enough to let me run with it. I then met with the choreographer and dancer, Amber Daniels to develop movements that could best capture my ideas. We filmed in a black box theatre. I wanted there to be nothing to distract from Amber and the visuals we'd create around her. The split screen aspects were designed with two ideas in mind – visualize the elements of Post and to give another visual representation of all things happening simultaneously. I'm really happy and proud of what we created."
